Bald Rock

By Tanner Call

Bald Rock in Oroville California can be described best as a peaceful place to wander. While the name is singular, there are tons of rocks all shapes and sizes sitting around on top of this mountain. From Chico, it’s closer to an hour’s drive, but it’s more than worth it.

Once you’re on the North side of Bidwell Bar Bridge, there is a winding road that will take you toward the top of the mountain, where you’ll find a small area to park your car. It’s pretty hard to miss with it’s big sign that says “Big Bald Rock Trailhead,” along with a public restroom. Side note: the restroom was locked when I went, so I wouldn’t rely on that being an option if you’ve gotta go.. From there, you can take a trail no more than a quarter mile long that will lead you to the Bald Rock lookout point. The massive rocks that the area is made up of are a product of tons of molten that hardened centuries ago.

When you get to the top of Bald Rock, there really is no specific spot to settle, since it’s such a large area with so many different formations you have the freedom to explore and just enjoy being up where the birds fly. The best part about the top of Bald Rock, is the silence. There’s nothing up there to bother you but the slight breeze that swifts through the mountains kissing the long flat surface of the gigantic formations. At the right spot, you might here some trickling water flowing slowly through the crevices of the rock, only adding to the therapy.

Bald rock provides an incredible view of Oroville. It’s quiet, simple, and pleasing in so many ways. The fact that there aren’t really signs or trails suggesting what you should do or where you should go, makes for a empowering yet therapeutic experience.
